Waves Washing the Sand: Awakening from a Dream

Awakening from a dream, a single thread of wind slips through the window,
blowing out the freezing lamp.
How can one endure the sobering wine, hearing again in the empty courtyard
the night rain dripping without end?
Alas, lingering too long, I have remained a wanderer at the edge of the sky.
I have failed a lovely woman and broken many a solemn vow;
how could I bear to see our former raptures
abruptly overturned into grief and bitterness?
Grief reaches its absolute depth.
Over and over I retrace the past: deep within the embroidered chamber,
how often wine was drained and songs died away,
under mandarin-duck quilts warm with fragrant incense—
how could a temporary parting cost her such a toll of heart and mind?
Our passion like floating clouds and merging rain
knew a myriad tenderness, a thousand ways of mutual cherishing.
Yet here we are today, under endless nights and the dragging water-clock,
estranged from one another for no reason at all.
When, oh when shall I once again hold her cloud-like beauty,
wish to lower the silken curtains and nestle on the pillow,
whispering softly, recounting how night after night in the river towns,
I count the freezing watch-drums and remember her?
mèng jué, tòu chuāng fēng yī xiàn, hán dēng chuī xī.
nà kān jiǔ xǐng, yòu wén kōng jiē, yè yǔ pín dī.

fù jiā rén, jǐ xǔ méng yán, biàn rěn bǎ, cóng qián huān huì, dǒu dùn fān chéng yōu qī.

zài sān zhuī sī, dòng fáng shēn chù, jǐ dù yǐn sàn gē lán, xiāng nuǎn yuān yāng bèi, qǐ zàn shí shū sàn, fèi yī xīn lì.

zhī hé shí, què yōng qín yún tài, yuàn dī wéi nì zhěn, qīng qīng xì shuō yǔ, jiāng xiāng yè yè, shù hán gēng sī yì.
Dream awakening, through window wind a thread, cold lamp blown extinguishes.
How to bear wine waking, again hear empty courtyard, night rain frequently drips.
Alas because of delay, long made edge-of-sky traveler.
Owed beautiful person, how many pledged words, how could bear to take, former joyful gatherings, abruptly turn over into sorrow and grief.
Sorrow reaches utmost.
Again and again retrospective thought, deep chamber interior, how many times drinking dispersed singing ended, incense warm mandarin duck quilts, how could temporary parting, expend her heart's strength.
Cloud drifting rain, have ten-thousand kinds thousand sorts, mutually pitying mutually cherishing.
Just arriving at present, sky long clepsydra eternal, for no reason self estranged.
Know what time, again embracing Qin cloud bearing, wishing lower curtain nestle pillow, softly quietly speak with, river township night by night, counting cold watches thinking remembering.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterpiece is composed under the traditional Song Ci lyric tune titled Waves Washing the Sand. As a quintessential example of the long lyric form, the piece exhibits a sophisticated division into two distinct stanzas that trace an emotional arc from immediate sensory desolation to sweeping retrospection, and finally to a yearning plea for future reunion. The metrical structure features alternating line lengths, moving fluidly from staccato phrases of three characters that articulate sudden shocks of consciousness to expansive, flowing lines that accommodate complex psychological introspection. The rhyme scheme shifts subtly across the stanzas, capturing the erratic yet persistent rhythm of a sleepless night spent listening to cold rain.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Set against the backdrop of the Northern Song Dynasty, this lyric reflects the acute psychological toll exacted upon scholars and officials navigating the bustling urban culture and metropolitan nightlife of Bianjing. Liu Yong, renowned for his revolutionary development of the long lyric form and his deep immersion in the entertainment quarters among courtesans and entertainers, frequently experienced the friction between official ambition and bohemian alienation. The existential impulse driving this piece is the poignant realization of separation—both physical and emotional—magnified by the protracted travels required of literati who found themselves estranged from their intimate circles amidst the vast expanses of the empire.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The lyric unfolds through a seamless movement from objective environmental stimuli to profound internal turmoil, structuring its narrative around memory and regret.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): The poem opens with a stark sensory shock in Line 1 ("Dream awakening, through window wind a thread, cold lamp blown extinguishes"), where the abrupt intrusion of the wind shatters the fragile sanctuary of a dream. Line 2 ("How to bear wine waking, again hear empty courtyard, night rain frequently drips") deepens the spatial isolation through auditory imagery, amplifying the desolation of the sobering traveler.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): The speaker transitions from external desolation to self-reproach in Line 3 ("Alas because of delay, long made edge-of-sky traveler"), diagnosing his rootless wandering. Line 4 ("I have failed a lovely person and broken many a solemn vow") confronts the ethical and emotional weight of abandoned commitments.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): The emotional core expands into detailed memory within the inner chambers, contrasting past warmth with present estrangement. The imagery of shared quilts and fading music highlights the profound emotional debt incurred by the abandoned partner.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The lyric resolves with a poignant projection toward an idealized future reunion, juxtaposing the endless progression of time with the intimate quietude of whispered confessions in the river towns.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poem relies on deeply ingrained classical Chinese motifs to articulate romantic longing and regret.

  • Night Rain and Cold Lamp: These elements function as external projections of the speaker's internal desolation, signaling winter, isolation, and the passage of time without solace.
  • Cloud and Rain: A classical metaphor originating from ancient shamanic lore regarding divine encounters, used here to evoke the intense, intimate union and passion shared between lovers.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical underpinning of the piece synthesizes the Buddhist apprehension of impermanence with the Confucian weight of moral responsibility in human relationships, complicated by the Daoist sense of wandering. Liu Yong captures the universal human tragedy of self-alienation—how worldly pursuits and unavoidable drifts lead individuals to fracture their most cherished bonds. Across centuries, the lyric resonates because it articulates the agonizing friction between fleeting intimacy and the inexorable march of time, reminding readers of the enduring vulnerability of the human heart.
