Bodhisattva Barbarian: Green Weeds Wrap the Courtyard Wall

Green weeds embrace the moss-grown courtyard wall,
while pale sun shrinks the plantains in the yard.
Across the steps, light butterflies ascend,
and silken blinds hang free where warmth is cast.
Upon the jade curtain-hook, a pair of swallows chattering;
around the jeweled well, willow down whirls fast.
From somewhere drifts the sound of tossing coins,
and through the green-screened window, spring slumber slips away at last.
綠蕪牆繞青苔院。
中庭日淡芭蕉卷。
蝴蝶上階飛。
烘簾自在垂。
玉鉤雙語燕。
寶甃楊花轉。
幾處簸錢聲。
綠窗春睡輕。

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric follows the strict metrical constraints of the Song Ci tune pattern titled Bodhisattva Barbarian. The tune consists of forty-four characters distributed across eight lines, featuring a rhyming structure that alternates or sustains rhyme through the final sounds of the couplets. The acoustic progression moves from the silent, overgrown imagery of the opening to the ambient sounds of late spring, relying on precise visual detailing rather than overt emotional exclamation.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Authored during the Northern or Southern Song dynasty by Chen Ke, this piece reflects the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the literati class who cultivated elite poetry focused on domestic tranquility, seasonal transitions, and subtle psychological moods. Set within a secluded elite courtyard, the poem captures the quiet stillness of the domestic inner chambers during late spring, mirroring the introspective reclusion valued by scholars escaping the heavy burdens of bureaucratic office.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem develops through a sequence of vivid sensory vignettes, moving from expansive exterior courtyard views inward toward the intimate sleeping quarters.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Green weeds wall surrounds blue-moss courtyard") establishes an atmosphere of undisturbed desolation and seclusion, reinforced in Line 2 ("Center courtyard sun pale plantain curls") by the image of the curled plantain leaves under a subdued spring sun.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("Butterflies upon steps fly") introduces gentle motion to the scene, which is balanced in Line 4 ("Warm blinds freely hang") by the unhurried stillness of the interior shading.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Line 5 ("Jade hook double speak swallows") uses auditory imagery of paired swallows to signify nesting and domestic harmony, while Line 6 ("Treasure well-curb willow catkins whirls") captures the scattering remnants of spring vegetation.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): Line 7 ("Several places tossing coin sound") introduces distant human activity through the traditional spring game of tossing coins, which dissolves into Line 8 ("Green window spring sleep light"), describing a sleeper half-awakening in the bright, quiet room.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The imagery within this lyric relies heavily on traditional botanical and fauna associations established across classical poetry.

  • Swallows: Symbolize the arrival of spring, domestic fidelity, and the bittersweet passage of time as they build nests in human dwellings.
  • Willow Catkins: Represent transience, wandering souls, and the ephemeral nature of spring beauty as they drift aimlessly on the wind.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The poem embodies the Daoist-infused aesthetic of quietude and spontaneous natural unfolding. By anchoring human emotion to the minute shifts of light, shadow, and animal activity in an isolated courtyard, the text bridges the gap between objective natural phenomena and subjective inner awareness, offering a timeless meditation on the delicate threshold between sleep, wakefulness, and seasonal change.
