Courtyard Full of Fragrance: Winds Age the Oriole Fledglings

Warm winds mature the fledgling orioles, spring rains swell the plums,
at noon the handsome trees cast pure and rounded shade.
The land lies low, the mountains near; garments grow damp, burning incense in vain.
People rest while crows and kites are glad;
beyond the little bridge, fresh green waters ripple and splash.
I lean long on the balustrade, amid yellow reeds and bitter bamboos,
contemplating a boat to drift upon the Nine Rivers.
Year after year,
like temple swallows adrift across boundless seas,
I come to lodge upon these towering rafters.
For now, forget what lies beyond this mortal frame,
and keep forever close to the wine cup.
A haggard wanderer weary of the southern land,
I cannot bear the frantic flutes and crowded strings.
Beside the banquet floor, pray set my mat and pillow first,
and let me sleep when the wine has made me drunk.
fēng lǎo yīng chú, yǔ féi méi zǐ, wǔ yīn jiā shù qīng yuán.
dì dī shān jìn, yī rùn fèi lú yān.
rén jìng wū yuān zì lè, xiǎo qiáo wài, xīn lǜ jiàn jiàn.
píng lán jiǔ, huáng lú kǔ zhú, nǐ fàn jiǔ jiāng chuán.
nián nián.
rú shè yàn, piāoliú hàn hǎi, lái jì xiū chuán.
qiě mò sī shēn wài, zháng jìn zūn qián.
qiáocuì jiāng nán juàn kè, bù kān tīng, jí guǎn fán xián.
gē yán pàn, xiān ān diàn zhěn, róng wǒ zuì shí mián.
Winds age oriole fledglings, rains plump plum fruits, noon shade of fine trees clear and round.
Ground low mountains near, garments damp, wasting stove smoke.
People quiet, crows and kites self-rejoice, small bridge outside, fresh green splashing, splashing.
Leaning on balustrade long, yellow reeds bitter bamboos, planning to float Nine Rivers boat.
Year after year.
Like shrine swallows, drifting across vast seas, coming to lodge on tall rafters.
For now do not think of body-outside, constantly near goblet-before.
Wasted Jiangnan weary traveler, unbearable to listen to, hurried flutes crowded strings.
Song banquet beside, first arrange mat and pillow, permit me drunk time to sleep.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This ci lyric is composed to the tune title Man ting fang (Courtyard Full of Fragrance), a classic Song dynasty long-form meter (changdiao). The architecture of the poem is bipartite, shifting seamlessly from an objective, painterly exterior landscape of late spring to an intensely subjective interior landscape of exile and emotional exhaustion. The rhyme scheme relies on even-numbered lines with level tone rhymes, creating a smooth, melancholic cadence that mimics the lingering dampness of the southern climate. The spatial movement proceeds from wide-angle meteorological observations down to a confined courtyard, outward to a distant river vision, and finally inward to the immediate physical space of a banquet couch.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Written by Zhou Bangyan (1056–1121), one of the greatest master craftsmen of Song ci poetry, this piece reflects the later years of his official career. Having served in various regional posts away from the capital, Zhou experienced the profound displacement, loneliness, and sensory overload characteristic of southern exile. The existential impulse of the poem springs from the tension between the lush, indifferent vitality of nature in early summer and the weary, aging scholar who feels completely alienated from his political center and personal ambitions.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

  • Lines 1-3 (Opening Couplet & Initial Setting): The wind ages the fledgling orioles, and the rain plumps the plums; at midday, the fine trees cast clear, round shades. These opening lines employ exquisite sensory verbs—lao (aging/maturing) and fei (plumping)—to capture the swift passage of late spring into early summer. The clear, round shade evokes a pristine, tranquil stillness.
  • Lines 4-6 (Environmental Confinement): Low-lying ground and nearby mountains make the air damp, requiring stove smoke to dry one's robes. In the quiet, crows and kites take their natural joy, while outside the small bridge, fresh green waters splash noisily. The claustrophobic dampness of the Jiangnan environment physically burdens the poet, contrasting with the carefree animals.
  • Lines 7-9 (Thematic Pivot): Leaning on the balustrade for long, amid yellow reeds and bitter bamboos, I contemplate drifting in a Jiujiang boat. The allusion to Bai Juyi's exile at Jiujiang immediately signals the poet's identification with disgraced literati, transforming a natural scene into a literary landscape of banishment.
  • Lines 10-14 (The Swallow Allegory): Year after year, like temple swallows, drifting across the vast sea, coming to lodge on tall rafters. Do not think of matters outside the body; keep ever close to the wine cup. The comparison to the migrant swallow underscores rootlessness, while the advice to embrace wine is a classic Daoist-inflected coping mechanism against political despair.
  • Lines 15-18 (Closing Cadence): A haggard, weary guest in the south, I cannot bear to listen to urgent pipes and flourishing strings. Beside the banquet mat, first set a bamboo mat and pillow, allowing me to sleep when I am drunk. The final lines reject the forced gaiety of musical entertainment, seeking instead the oblivion of drunken slumber on a makeshift bed, sealing the poem in profound weariness.

IV. Aesthetic Synthesis & Poetic Aftertaste

This lyric achieves its mastery through the technique of jing wu ji qing (infusing scenery with deep emotion), a hallmark of Zhou Bangyan's poetic art. By juxtaposing the rich, fertile imagery of the southern landscape with the inner desolation of the aging traveler, Zhou creates an enduring aesthetic of zhou mian (lingering density). The poem leaves an aftertaste of profound melancholy, wherein the lushness of nature serves not to comfort, but to accentuate the poignant isolation of the exiled scholar.
