Flower Transgression: On the Plum Blossom

So slender and fair, with powder-white cheeks and soft bee-gold tints,
her kingfisher hairpins slip off her temples.
Last night in the chilly courtyard, bathed in moonlight, we met.
Deep in slumber, the cruel, piercing wind grew harsh,
startling her awake, her heart still unsettled.
At dawn, holding a warm flask of emerald hue,
she realized the floral dream was true.
The river goddesses turned into this quiet fragrance, treading the rippling waves,
leaving old regrets upon the cloudy, sandy banks.
Beside the stone steps, her cold scent scatters, frozen plum concealing its grace.
Near the incense burner, moved close to the pillow,
once again I see the dark hair of the jade-like beauty.
Soon she will call to admire the pure, splendid garden pavilions,
where the terrace cups must be filled to the brim.
xiǎo pīng tíng, qīng qiān sù yè, fēng huáng àn tōu yūn.
cuì qiào qī bìn.
zuò yè lěng zhōng tíng, yuè xià xiāng rèn.
shuì nóng gèng kǔ qī fēng jǐn.
jīng huí xīn wèi wěn.
sòng xiǎo sè, yì hú cōng qiàn, cái zhī huā mèng zhǔn.
xiāng é huà zuò cǐ yōu fāng, líng bō lù, gǔ àn yún shā yí hèn.
lín qì yǐng, hán xiāng luàn, dòng méi cáng yùn.
xūn lú pàn, xuán yí bàng zhěn, hái yòu jiàn, yù rén chuí gàn zhěn.
liào huàn shǎng, qīng huá chí guǎn, tái bēi xū mǎn yǐn.
Little slender graceful, clear lead white cheeks, bee yellow secretly steals tint.
Kingfisher hairpins tilt at temples.
Last night cold in central courtyard, under moonlight mutual recognition.
Sleep deep furthermore bitter cruel wind tight.
Startled turns heart not yet stable.
Sending dawn color, one pot green-red, only then knows flower dream accurate.
Xiang goddess transforms to make this hidden fragrance, crossing wave path, ancient bank cloud sand remaining regret.
Facing stone steps shadow, cold fragrance disordered, frozen plum conceals rhythm.
Incense burner side, revolving moves beside pillow, still again sees, jade person hangs dark hair.
Expects calls to appreciate, pure magnificent pond pavilion, terrace cup must fully drink.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This ci lyric is composed to the tune title 'Hua Fan' (Plum Blossom's Intrusion), a rare and demanding Song dynasty long lyric form featuring dense internal rhymes, abrupt tonal shifts, and complex rhythmic pacing. The architecture is divided into two stanzas, shifting spatial focus from the intimate nocturnal encounter with the blossom to a mythic, historical projection along the Xiang River, and finally returning to the domestic bedchamber. The rhyme scheme alternates between level and oblique tones, utilizing falling cadences that mirror the chill of late winter and the fragility of the blossom's ethereal presence.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Authored by Wu Wenying (c. 1200–c. 1260), one of the premier masters of the late Southern Song formalist ci tradition, this lyric reflects the melancholic refinement of Hangzhou literati culture during a period of acute dynastic anxiety under the shadow of the rising Mongol threat. Wu's poetry is renowned for its dense imagery, sensory synesthesia, and elegiac grief for lost loves and a fading imperial capital. Here, the plum blossom serves as a poignant emblem of lonely integrity, exquisite suffering, and phantom memory amidst desolation.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

  • Stanza 1, Lines 1-5 (Opening and Nocturnal Recognition): The lyric opens with the delicate portrait of the plum blossom as a slender beauty with natural powder and light yellow stamen makeup, leaning against the frosty courtyard. The speaker encounters the flower under the cold moonlight, disturbed by the piercing night wind that shatters peaceful sleep.
  • Stanza 1, Lines 6-8 (Awakening and Dawn Verification): The abrupt awakening brings the realization of the harsh morning light filtering through jade curtains, confirming that the nocturnal vision of the floral sprite was not merely a fleeting dream.
  • Stanza 2, Lines 1-4 (Mythic Projection and Historical Sorrow): The flower is linked to the Xiang River goddesses (Xiang E), descending along the wave-treading path of Cao Zhi's divine muse, leaving behind eternal sorrow amid ancient banks, cold shadows, and frozen plum tones.
  • Stanza 2, Lines 5-8 (Return to Chamber and Concluding Toast): The speaker moves the incense burner closer to the pillow, conjuring the dark-haired beauty once more. The poem concludes with a call to summon appreciative friends to fill golden goblets in clear pavilions, drinking deeply to honor the transcendent transient blossom.

IV. Aesthetic Synthesis & Poetic Aftertaste

Wu Wenying achieves a masterclass in psychological projection and sensory layering, blending botanical observation with haunting human nostalgia. The poem operates through a delicate web of elusive transitions, where flower, ghost, and remembered lover blur into a single configuration of exquisite grief. The lingering aftertaste is one of poignant desolation, encapsulated by the fading chill of winter and the desperate, defiant warmth of artistic creation against the tide of historical impermanence.
