Music to Plead with Heaven: On the Xiling Road

Mist-woven waves and peach-leaf paths along Xiling's shore,
Ten years my spirit snapped at the tidal stream's tail.
I grasp old willows once more, gulls scatter from our parting place,
Atop the perilous pavilion I lean alone amidst fading traces.
A sudden chill wind starts to blow.
Across vast misty sandbanks, a sail flies by;
In the gathering dusk, distant mountains lie in emerald bands.
Only the river blossoms remain,
Together with autumn's mirror reflecting my withered face.
In the magnificent hall, flickering candles speed the parting guest;
Where her bright eyes glance back,
Her fragrant beauty flows like water.
Slender bones frozen as ice, soft fingers dipped in snow—
I still recall the deep intent of sharing the melon.
The clear wine goblet is yet unwashed.
Dreams cannot moisten the drifting clouds,
They only vainly stain my lingering tears.
What a pity, this autumn night,
Amidst the din of crickets and sparse, drifting rain.
yān bō táo yè xī líng lù, shí nián duàn hún cháo wěi.
gǔ liǔ chóng pān, qīng ōu jù bié, chén jī wēi tíng dú yǐ.
liáng sī zhà qǐ.
mǎo yān qiè fēi fān, mù shān héng cuì.
dàn yǒu jiāng huā, gòng lín qiū jìng zhào qiáo cuì.
huá táng zhú àn sòng kè, yǎn bō huí pàn chù, fāng yàn liú shuǐ.
sù gǔ níng bīng, róu cōng zhàn xuě, yóu yì fēn guā shēn yì.
qīng zūn wèi xǐ.
mèng bù shī xíng yún, màn zhān cán lèi.
kě xī qiū xiāo, luàn qióng shū yǔ lǐ.
Mist waves peach leaves Xiling road, ten years broken soul tide tail.
Ancient willows again climbed, light gulls gathered parted, old traces dangerous pavilion alone leaned.
Cool breeze suddenly rises.
Vast misty sandbar flying sail, evening mountains horizontal kingfisher.
Only have river flowers, together facing autumn mirror reflect haggard.
Splendid hall candle dark sending guest, eye waves turning glancing place, fragrant brilliance flowing water.
White bone condensed ice, soft scallion dipped snow, still remember dividing melon deep meaning.
Clear goblet not yet washed.
Dream not wet-moving cloud, vainly stained remaining tears.
Regrettable autumn night, chaotic crickets sparse rain inside.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This ci lyric is composed to the tune title "Qi Tian Le" (Heaven-Rending Music), a long-form pattern (manci) comprising ninety-five characters divided into two stanzas. Wu Wenying, a master of the late Song lüci (regulated lyric poetry) tradition, manipulates caesura and tonal shifts with exquisite sensitivity. The rhyme scheme shifts fluidly across entering and level tones, matching the elegaic emotional arc of parting and remembrance. The spatial architecture of the lyric moves dynamically from expansive external vistas of the Qiantang River to intimate interior chambers, before dissolving back into the desolate nocturnal landscape of autumn rain and crickets.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Authored during the late Southern Song dynasty, this lyric captures the poignant melancholia characteristic of Wu Wenying's later years in Lin'an (modern Hangzhou). The poet reflects on a past romance tied to the picturesque landscape of Xiling and the Qiantang River tidal basin. Decades of political instability and personal transience permeate the lines, transforming a conventional parting lyric into an existential meditation on memory, decay, and the relentless passage of time.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

  • Lines 1-4 (Opening Couplet): The lyric opens with misty waves along the peach-leaf ferry at Xiling, where for ten years the poet's soul has been severed by the roaring tidal bore. Reclasping the ancient willow branches and watching light gulls gather for departure, he leans alone upon the perilous pavilion where traces of the past linger.
  • Lines 5-8 (Stanza 1 Continuation): A cool breeze suddenly rises across the river. In the distance, sails fly over misty sandbanks while evening mountains lie in horizontal strips of emerald. Only the river flowers remain to gaze into the autumn mirror, reflecting the poet's haggard visage.
  • Lines 9-12 (Stanza 2 Opening): In the magnificent hall, candles dim as they bid farewell to the departing guest. Where her eyes turn in a backward glance, her radiant beauty flows away like water. Her bones are white as congealed ice, her tender fingers dip like snow, and he still remembers the deep meaning of dividing the melon at their parting.
  • Lines 13-16 (Closing Couplet): The pure wine goblet remains unwashed. Dreams cannot moisten the traveling clouds, leaving only residual tears to wet the garments. What a pity for such an autumn night, wasted amidst the sound of chaotic crickets and sparse rain.

IV. Aesthetic Synthesis & Poetic Aftertaste

Wu Wenying achieves a density of sensory imagery and structural intricacy that defines the pinnacle of Southern Song ci aesthetics. By intertwining the natural desolation of the Qiantang autumn with the tactile memories of a lost courtesan, the lyric transcends biographical lament. The lingering aftertaste is one of desolate stillness, where external autumn elements and internal grief merge indistinguishably.
