Partridge Sky: Colorful Sleeves Offered Warmly

Silk sleeves offered the jade goblet bright,
We wagered our youth on a drunken night.
Her dance chased down the moon from the willow tower's crest,
Her song outlasted the fan-shaken breeze of peach-blossom rest.
Since we parted, I yearn for that meeting again,
My ghost-wandering dreams have pursued you in vain.
Tonight, by the silver lamp's flickering glow,
I stare at your face, half-afraid it's a dream.
cǎi xiù yīn qín pěng yù zhōng.
dāng nián pīn què zuì yán hóng.
wǔ dī yáng liǔ lóu xīn yuè, gē jìn táo huā shàn yǐng fēng.
cóng bié hòu, yì xiāng féng.
jǐ huí hún mèng yǔ jūn tóng.
jīn xiāo shèng bǎ yín gāng zhào, yóu kǒng xiāng féng shì mèng zhōng.
Colorful sleeves eagerly presented the jade cup.
That year I risked everything so my drunken face was red.
The dance lowered the moon at the willow pavilion's heart, the song exhausted the breeze of peach-blossom fan shadows.
Ever since we parted, I have remembered our meeting.
How many times in soul dreams have I been with you.
Tonight I needlessly hold the silver lamp to illuminate,
Still fearing our meeting is within a dream.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric to the tune 'Partridge Sky' (Zhe Gu Tian) exemplifies the refined artistry of Song dynasty ci poetry. The piece adheres strictly to the regulated metrical pattern of the designated tune, featuring alternating line lengths that build an intimate, conversational rhythm. The rhyme scheme is tightly controlled, utilizing an even-line rhyme structure with a falling tone that enhances the wistful, melancholic atmosphere. Architecturally, the poem is divided into two distinct stanzas: the first evokes a vivid, nostalgic memory of past revelry, while the second pivots sharply to the poignant, solitary present, creating a seamless spatial and temporal movement between dream and wakefulness.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Authored by Yan Jidao, a master of the high-classical Northern Song ci tradition, the poem reflects the bittersweet ethos of the elite literati class. Yan, who lived through the shifting political fortunes of the imperial court, often poured his deepest emotional vulnerabilities into his lyrics, particularly commemorating the talented singing girls and entertainers of his youth. The existential impulse of this piece stems from the profound sense of loss and disillusionment that marked his later years. Separated from past companions and the vibrant social life of the capital, the poet uses memory as both a sanctuary and a source of acute pain, capturing the fleeting nature of youth, beauty, and human connection.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): The poem opens with a vivid tableau of past indulgence. The image of colourful sleeves attentively presenting jade wine cups establishes an atmosphere of refined luxury and affectionate hospitality. The poet recalls how he willingly cast aside all restraint, letting his intoxicated face flush red without regret, underscoring the absolute abandon of those bygone gatherings.
  • Lines 3-4 (Internal Couplet): Time accelerates through sensory mastery. The movement of the dance causes the moon above the willow-surrounded pavilion to sink low, while the endless singing stirs breezes within peach-blossom fans. This couplet brilliantly compresses hours of fading night into enduring cinematic imagery, marking the zenith of ephemeral joy before separation.
  • Lines 5-6 (Transition & Stanza Pivot): The perspective shifts abruptly from the radiant past to the bleak aftermath. The simple lamentation 'Since we parted, I have yearned for our reunion' bridges the temporal chasm. The recurring nocturnal dreams, where souls unite despite physical distance, emphasize a persistent longing that defies the barriers of time and space.
  • Lines 7-8 (Closing Couplet): The poem culminates in a psychologically exquisite paradox. Holding a silver lamp high into the night to examine the face of the beloved, the narrator confesses a terrifying doubt: even in reunion, the encounter feels so surreal that he fears it is merely another dream. This lingering anxiety encapsulates the profound psychological scar left by protracted separation.

IV. Aesthetic Synthesis & Poetic Aftertaste

The aesthetic triumph of Yan Jidao's lyric lies in its delicate balance between sensory opulence and psychological desolation. By contrasting the vibrant, crowded banquet of memory with the flickering, lonely lamplight of the present, the poem achieves a haunting emotional resonance. The final couplet leaves a profound poetic aftertaste, dissolving the boundary between illusion and reality, and cementing the work as one of the most poignant explorations of longing, memory, and existential doubt in the canonical literature of the Song dynasty.
