Tower Passing the Qin: Autumn Melancholy and Parting

The water bathes a crystal moon, leaves whisper in the chill breeze,
the sound of horse hooves fades down quiet lanes.
Idly leaning by the dew-wet well, smiling at fireflies in flight,
she tears her light, painted gauze fan in playful chase.
The night deepens, people fall still; she leans against the balustrade,
grief banishing sleep, standing as the clepsydra arrows drain.
Alas, youth vanishes in a breath, a thousand miles separate us,
her dreams drowned, her letters lost in distant realms.
In vain they tell of temples growing frail against the ivory comb,
of a face fading in the golden mirror, weary of seasonal makeup.
Plum-rains dampen the earth, rainbow-mists nourish the green moss,
and the trellis of crimson dancing flowers has withered away.
Who would believe such desolation? For his sake, Jiang Yan's literary talent wanes,
and Xun Qian's health is consumed by grief.
Beneath the shadow of the silver river, only the sparse stars linger on.
shuǐ yù qīng chán, yè xuān liáng chuī, xiàng mò mǎ shēng chū duàn.
xian yī lù jǐng, xiào pū liú yíng, rě pò huà luó qīng shàn.
rén jìng yè jiǔ píng lán, chóu bù guī mián, lì cán gēng jiàn.
tàn nián huá yī shùn, rén jīn qiān lǐ, mèng shěn shū yuǎn.
kōng jiàn shuō, bìn qiè qióng shū, róng xiāo jīn jìng, jiàn lǎn chèn shí yún rǎn.
méi fēng dì rù, hóng yǔ tái zī, yī jià wǔ hóng dōu biàn.
shuí xìn wú, wèi yī cái jiǎn jiāng yān, qíng shāng xún qiàn.
dàn míng hé yǐng xià, hái kàn xī xīng shù diǎn.
Water bathes clear toad, leaves rustle cool breeze, alley horse sound first cut.
Leisurely lean dew well, smiling slap floating firefly, brush break painted gauze light fan.
People quiet night long rely balustrade, sorrow not return sleep, stand exhaust watch arrow.
Sigh years flash an instant, person now thousand miles, dream sunk letter far.
Empty hear say, temples fear jade comb, face waste gold mirror, gradually lazy chase season cosmetic.
Plum wind land humid, rainbow rain moss nourish, one trellis dance red all change.
Who believe none, for him talent diminish Jiang Yan, feeling hurt Xun Qian.
Only bright river shadow under, still see sparse star few dots.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric is composed to the tune pattern titled Passing the Qin Tower, an elaborate double-stanza template within the Ci poetic tradition of the Song Dynasty. The verse is structured with a dense deployment of sonic modulation, utilizing rapid shifts between the level and deflected tones to mirror the psychological instability of the protagonist. Zhou Bangyan is celebrated as the grand synthesizer of the Northern Song lyric, renowned for his intricate jianti technique, which bridges narrative progression with sudden, highly charged affective leaps. The metrical design alternates between short, breathless conversational openings and sprawling, rhythmic cadences in the second half, establishing a masterclass in interior dramatic pacing.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Written during the late Northern Song Dynasty, a period of profound scholarly refinement shadowed by factional court intrigues and bureaucratic exile, this piece captures the quintessential literati anxiety of displacement and romantic separation. Zhou Bangyan spent much of his official career drifting through regional prefectures far from the capital of Bianliang. The existential impulse of the poem springs from the convergence of personal displacement and the inevitable decay of youth. The temporal setting is late summer transitioning into early autumn, a liminal seasonal phase that traditionally evokes deep melancholy in classical Chinese aesthetic discourse, signifying both meteorological dampness and emotional rot.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds across a meticulously choreographed psychological arc, moving from ambient nocturnal observation to internal desolation.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("The water bathes a crystal moon") introduces the celestial symbol of the moon reflected in water, paired with Line 2 ("leaves whisper in the chill breeze"), establishing an immediate sensory matrix of autumn where sound and temperature evoke solitude.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("the sound of horse hooves fades down quiet lanes") establishes the human silence of the metropolis, while Line 4 ("Idly leaning by the dew-wet well") captures domestic stillness punctuated by futile actions.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Line 5 ("grief banishing sleep, standing as the clepsydra arrows drain") marks the physical toll of insomnia, leading directly into Line 6 ("Alas, youth vanishes in a breath"), where spatial separation breaches the psychological defenses of the protagonist.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The concluding lines ("Beneath the shadow of the silver river, only the sparse stars linger on") project the solitary human tragedy onto the cosmic canvas of the Milky Way, dissolving individual sorrow into the indifferent vastness of the autumn sky.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

Zhou Bangyan embeds rich traditional tropes that resonate deeply with educated readers of the classical era.

  • Cicada (Chan) and Seasonal Flora: The references to the plum-rains and fading trellis flowers operate as structural objective correlatives, mapping the physical deterioration of botanical life onto the emotional decay of the abandoned woman.
  • Autumn Frost / Dew: The presence of heavy dew by the well signifies not only physical chill but the gathering frost of emotional neglect and imperial or romantic disfavor.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical core of the poem rests upon the intersection of classical Buddhist impermanence and Confucian-Daoist emotional endurance. The realization that human vitality fades as swiftly as seasonal flora reflects the fundamental transience of earthly existence. Yet, rather than descending into cynical detachment, the poem honors the deep ethical fidelity of emotional suffering. The literary allusions to Jiang Yan losing his poetic inspiration and Xun Qian dying of grief elevate personal heartbreak into a universal meditation on human vulnerability, proving that sincere attachment remains the ultimate proof of an awakened soul.
