Washing Silk Stream: One Tune of New Verses, a Single Cup of Wine

One glass of wine, a fresh and tender song,
the weather of last year, these towers unchanged.
The setting sun sinks west: how long, how long
before it turns? The flowers fall, estranged
beyond all help, while swallows, known of old,
come wheeling back. Along the garden lane
of fragrant grass, through autumn's fading gold,
I pace the quiet path in grief again.
一曲新詞酒一杯。
去年天氣舊亭臺。
夕陽西下幾時回。
無可奈何花落去,似曾相識燕歸來。
小園香徑獨徘徊。
yī qǔ xīn cí jiǔ yì bēi
qù nián tiān qì jiù tíng tái
xī yáng xī xià jǐ shí huí
wú kě nài hé huā luò qù
sì céng xiāng shí yàn guī lái
xiǎo yuán xiāng jìng dú pái huái
One tune of new lyrics, a single cup of wine,
last year's weather, the old pavilions and towers.
The setting sun sinks west, when will it return?
Helplessly the flowers fall away,
as though once acquainted, the swallows fly back.
In the small garden's fragrant path, alone I pace to and fro.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterwork belongs to the renowned Song lyric genre under the fixed musical tune pattern titled Washing Silk Stream. The structure comprises six lines divided into two distinct stanzas, following a precise symmetrical metrical framework. The rhyme scheme relies upon a delicate level-tone rhyme ending the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth lines, establishing an undulating acoustic resonance that mirrors the emotional ebb and flow of lingering sorrow.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the Northern Song Dynasty under the reign of the imperial court, the piece reflects the sophisticated yet melancholy aesthetic sensibilities of elite scholar-officials such as Yan Shu, who served as a high-ranking chancellor. Far from the battlefield turmoil of earlier eras, the existential impulse here springs from internal psychological states: the acute awareness of time's irreversible passage, the sorrow of parting, and the quiet dignity required to maintain emotional equilibrium amidst imperial splendor and fading youth.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds through a masterly progression from convivial courtly gathering to solitary philosophical reflection, utilizing sensory details to anchor vast temporal shifts.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("One tune of new lyrics, a single cup of wine") establishes an immediate atmosphere of refined banquet culture. Line 2 ("last year's weather, the old pavilions and towers") abruptly widens the temporal lens, introducing the haunting persistence of physical environments against the mutability of human experience.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("The setting sun sinks west, when will it return?") invokes the cosmic tragedy of irreversible solar descent. Line 4 ("Helplessly the flowers fall away") presents the iconic antithetical couplet where natural decay proceeds indifferent to human grief.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Line 5 ("as though once acquainted, the swallows fly back") offers a poignant contrast through returning migrant birds, bridging past and present. Closing Lines ("In the small garden's fragrant path, alone I pace to and fro") resolve the cosmic meditation into intimate, solitary physical movement.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poetry of the Song elite is deeply invested in natural emblems that carry centuries of accumulated literary resonance.

  • Falling Flowers: Explain why it represents the inevitable fading of youth, beauty, and political favor, embodying the poignant grief of time slipping beyond human grasp.
  • Returning Swallows: Explain its cultural connotation of cyclical cosmic time mocking linear human mourning, returning faithfully to old haunts while human lives transform irreversibly.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical underpinning fuses a gentle Buddhist awareness of impermanence with a deeply traditional Confucian and scholarly sensitivity to the passage of time. Rather than yielding to violent despair, the poet adopts a posture of quiet melancholy resignation, capturing the universal human paradox: our acute longing to arrest time contrasted with the magnificent, indifferent beauty of the natural world.
