Immortal of the Auspicious Crane: Rosy Cheeks Imprinted on the Pillow

Her flushed cheek leaves its rosy stamp upon the pillow,
Awakening, her coronet is still awry.
Behind the folding screen, the muskwood embers die.
Her brow-peaks press in emerald shadow, tear-drops fleck her powder,
While deep within the hall, the quiet day grows longer.
Swallows dart across the wind-swept curtains and the dewy well,
With none to hear her tale of yearning, her sad heart can only tell
How day by day her silken sash hangs looser on her waist.
She recalls the past:
The failing lamp, the crimson bed-curtains, the pale moon on gauze windows,
That former landscape now erased.
The path to the cloud-veiled terrace stretches far away,
And dreams of mating clouds and rain drift where they may.
When he returns, she vows to lead him to the flowering branch and gaze,
And question closely of the oaths he made in earlier days—
To ask why, through delay, their youth has slipped away, leaving no rest for troubled hearts.

Face's rosy glow redly imprints the pillow.
Waking from sleep, her hair-pin crown still is not neat.
Behind the screen, musk charcoal has grown cold.
Only her brow-peaks press emerald, tear-pearls flick powder.
Hall is deep, day is long.
Swallows cross-fly, wind-curtained dewy well.
Resenting no person, to speak with of mutual longing, these days girdle-band has widened completely.
Again remembering.
Remnant lamp, red bed-curtains, pale moon, gauze window, that time's scenery.
Terrace of Yang path is distant.
Cloud and rain dreams, then have no certainty.
Waiting for his return, first pointing to flower-tips making him look, then taking heart's vow to carefully question.
Questioning how through procrastination, youth has passed, how can life's meaning be steady.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric follows the Song Ci tune pattern titled Immortal of the Auspicious Crane. The tune is characterized by a bipartite structure with intricate variations in line length, shifting between brisk colloquial pacing and expansive lyrical reverie. The prosody balances uneven stanza breaks and uses falling rhymes that underscore the sorrowful psychological state of the protagonist. Parallel structures in the interior lines establish a tight emotional counterpoint between external natural scenery and internal desolation.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the Song dynasty, this lyric reflects the refined domestic aesthetics and emotional interiority cultivated within elite metropolitan literary circles. The work captures the quintessential Ci themes of feminine longing, separation, and the passage of time during a period when urban leisure and romanticized melancholia dominated elite artistic expression. The poet channels the psychological landscape of an abandoned or separated woman, transforming mundane domestic isolation into a universal exploration of transience and unfulfilled vows.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds as a sequential descent from waking consciousness into memory, culminating in an assertive demand for emotional reckoning. The opening lines establish an intimate domestic interior before widening to external spring scenery.

  • Lines 1-4 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Face's rosy glow redly imprints the pillow") and Line 2 ("Awakening, her coronet is still awry") capture the physical inertia of waking from restless sleep. Line 3 ("Behind the screen, musk charcoal has grown cold") and Line 4 ("Her brow-peaks press in emerald shadow") heighten the sense of physical neglect and emotional chill.
  • Lines 5-8 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 5 ("While deep within the hall, the quiet day grows longer") and Line 6 ("Swallows dart across the wind-swept curtains") contrast the crushing stillness of the interior with the lively, indifferent motion of spring nature, leading directly into the confession of physical emaciation in Line 8.
  • Lines 9-12 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): The stanza transition introduces a flashback. Line 10 ("The failing lamp, the crimson bed-curtains") recalls past intimacy, which is immediately juxtaposed in Line 11 with the mythological allusion to the distant Yang Terrace where cloud and rain dreams dissolve into uncertainty.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The final lines shift from passive lament to active defiance. Line 13 ("When he returns, she vows to lead him to the flowering branch") and Line 15 ("To ask why, through delay, their youth has slipped away") transform sorrow into a poignant interrogation of lost time and broken promises.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poem relies on established classical topoi to convey psychological states without explicit exposition. The cold musk charcoal and fading lamp serve as objective correlatives for extinguished passion. The swallows in spring represent indifferent vitality that mocks human grief. The shrinking girdle-band is a traditional poetic motif signifying physical decline caused by lovesickness, while the distant path to the cloud-veiled terrace invokes classical tales of divine romantic encounters that ultimately prove elusive.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

At its philosophical core, the lyric addresses the tragic irreversibility of time and the vulnerability of human commitments against the backdrop of natural cycles. By contrasting the enduring renewal of spring flowers and swallows with the perishable nature of human youth, the poem articulates a poignant meditation on mortality and longing that transcends its specific dynastic context to speak universally to the human condition.
