To the Tune of Mo Shan Xi: On Plum Blossoms

Unpainted, unadorned, she wears her genuine grace,
No leaden cosmetics or powder upon her face.
Beyond the bamboo, a single bough slants bright,
Like a beauty at dusk in the chill of night.
In the twilight courtyard, her pure scent drifts wide,
While fine winds whisper and snowflakes softly slide,
And worse are the paths by the riverside.
Her sparse shadow lingers beside the pale moon,
Where dreams drift away to a heartbreaking swoon.
When her fruit turns yellow in the coming days,
She must weather the drizzle that dims and delays.
A solitary blossom throughout her whole span,
She feeds every sorrow a sensitive man,
Till Dongyang grows thin from his lovesick pain—
Oh, flower, do you know of this heart and its strain?
xǐ zhuāng zhēn tài, bú zuò qiān huá yù.
zhuó wài yì zhī xié, xiǎng jiā rén, tiān hán rì mù.
huáng hūn xiǎo yuàn, wú chù zhù qīng xiāng, fēng xì xì, xuě chuí chuí, hé kuàng jiāng tóu lù.
yuè biān shū yǐng, mèng dào xiāo hún chù.
jié zǐ yù huáng shí, yòu xū zhe, lián xián xì yǔ.
gū fāng yí shì, gōng duàn yǒu qíng chóu, xiāo shòu què, dōng yáng yě, shì wèn huā zhī fǒu.
Washed makeup true posture, not making lead and powder adornment.
Outside the bamboo one branch slants, imagining the beautiful person, weather cold sun twilight.
Dusk small courtyard, no place holding clear fragrance, wind fine fine, snow drooping drooping, how much more the river head road.
Beside the moon sparse shadows, dreams arrive at the soul-melting place.
Forming fruit about to yellow time, again must bear, continuous fine rain.
Solitary fragrance one lifetime, supplies completely affectionate sorrow, emaciating indeed, Dongyang also, try to ask flowers know whether.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric poem is composed to the classical Song Ci tune pattern titled Mo Shan Xi. The tune requires a specific metrical distribution of short and long lines that mirror the unpredictable surges of emotional intensity characteristic of Southern Song aesthetics. The rhyming structure utilizes entering level tones across delicate rhymes that evoke both fragility and psychological depth, matching the austere beauty of the plum blossom.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Authored during the culturally refined yet politically fractured Song Dynasty, the text encapsulates the melancholic interiority shared by scholar-officials navigating personal displacement, refined reclusion, and transient aesthetic beauty. The poet channels the literary persona of the scholar-official who finds in the winter plum blossom an ultimate emblem of moral integrity and unyielding fidelity amidst declining fortunes.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds across a meticulously orchestrated arc, moving from physical observation to a dreamscape of longing and finally into philosophical resignation.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Washed makeup true posture, not making lead and powder adornment") establishes the natural purity of the blossom, rejecting artificial embellishments. Line 2 ("Outside the bamboo one branch slants") introduces the iconic asymmetric stance of the winter plum.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("imagining the beautiful person, weather cold sun twilight") evokes traditional poetic associations connecting floral beauty with the neglected worthy retainer or loyal scholar.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Lines 5-6 ("In the twilight courtyard, her pure scent drifts wide, / While fine winds whisper and snowflakes softly slide") intensify the sensory isolation through desolate atmospheric elements.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The concluding lines ("A solitary blossom throughout her whole span, / She feeds every sorrow a sensitive man") invoke the classic historical literary allusion to the poet Shen Yue of the Liang dynasty, whose waist grew thin from sorrow, thereby cementing the fusion between floral mortality and human heartbreak.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The imagery within this lyric relies heavily on deeply coded traditional motifs.

  • Plum Blossom: It serves as the ultimate botanical symbol of moral resilience, blooming resolutely amidst snow and frost when all other vegetation has withered.
  • Dongyang Allusion: The reference to Dongyang invokes the historical figure Shen Yue, whose emaciated waist became a standard literary trope for lovesick grief or melancholy exhaustion caused by intense intellectual or emotional refinement.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical underpinnings of the work intertwine Confucian dedication with Daoist appreciation for natural transience. The plum blossom does not strive for worldly recognition; its solitary perfection exists for its own integrity. This aesthetic captures a universal human resonance: the dignity of maintaining inner virtue and refined sensibility even when exposed to the harshest seasonal and existential frosts.
