Autumn Evening

Red candles shed an autumn chill across the painted screen,
With silken gauze she swats at fireflies drifting low.
The palace night is cool and clear like flowing water;
She sits alone to watch the Cowherd and the Weaver glow.
紅燭秋光冷畫屏,輕羅小扇撲流螢。
天階夜色涼如水,坐看牽牛織女星。
hóng zhú qiū guāng lěng huà píng,
qīng luó xiǎo shàn pū liú yíng.
tiān jiē yè sè liáng rú shuǐ,
zuò kàn qiān niú zhī nǚ xīng.
Red candle autumn light chills painted screen,
light gauze small fan flutters floating fireflies.
Heavenly staircase night color cold like water,
sitting watching Cowherd Weaver Maid stars.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This poem is written in the traditional Seven-Character Quatrain form, adhering to strict regulated verse meter with the level tone rhyme. The tonal and visual structures throughout the work are meticulously balanced. The opening couplet establishes an immediate indoor domestic space illuminated by the dimming red candle, transitioning smoothly to the outdoor celestial sphere in the closing couplet. The middle couplets rely on quiet, implicit antithesis, contrasting the solitary physical movement of the woman with the vast, immovable expanse of the starry night sky.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Set during the late Tang Dynasty, a period marked by subtle palace intrigues and the poignant melancholy of imperial decline, this quatrain captures the inner emotional world of palace women confined within the deep recesses of the inner chambers. Du Mu, renowned for his lyrical mastery of evocative nostalgia and sensual elegance, distills the vast architecture of imperial isolation into a single, haunting tableau of unrequited longing and silent endurance.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem traces a silent psychological journey from intimate enclosure to cosmic isolation, capturing a gradual descent into profound emotional stillness.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Red candle autumn light chills painted screen") introduces the crisp, desolate atmosphere of autumn within the inner chambers, where even the warm red candle fails to dispel the chill. Line 2 ("Light gauze small fan flutters floating fireflies") portrays the classic motif of palace loneliness, where futile gestures substitute for human connection.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("Heavenly staircase night color cold like water") expands the psychological scope outward, using the metaphor of water to describe the pervasive, chilling night air that fills the imperial courtyard.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): Line 4 ("Sitting watching Cowherd Weaver Maid stars") invokes the timeless legend of the celestial lovers separated by the Milky Way, drawing a poignant parallel between their annual reunion and the mortal woman's permanent solitude.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The imagery in the poem carries profound traditional weight, operating on multiple layers of classical allusion and aesthetic resonance.

  • Painted Screen: Represents the physical enclosure and psychological barrier separating the palace woman from the outside world, framing her isolation within decorative artificiality.
  • Fireflies: Symbolize fleeting, ephemeral beauty and the short-lived affections of the imperial favor, drifting aimlessly in the dark without a permanent home.
  • Cowherd and Weaver Stars: Evokes the legendary tragic romance of the two celestial deities, serving as an emblem of eternal longing, separation, and the pain of unfulfilled devotion under an indifferent sky.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The poem merges Daoist detachment with Confucian themes of duty and endurance, focusing on the universal human experience of solitude and emotional longing. Without a single word of explicit complaint, Du Mu portrays the quiet tragedy of unfulfilled potential and silent waiting. The work transcends its specific historical context in the imperial palaces of ancient China, resonating across global literature as a timeless meditation on isolation, beauty, and the quiet dignity of endurance under the infinite stars.
