Deer Park

Empty mountains, no one in sight,
only the echo of human voices.
Returning light enters the deep woods,
shining once more on the green moss.
空山不見人,但聞人語響。
返景入深林,復照青苔上。
kōng shān bú jiàn rén,
dàn wén rén yǔ xiǎng.
fǎn jǐng rù shēn lín,
fù zhào qīng tái shàng.
Empty mountain not see people,
only hear people speech echoing.
Returned sunlight enters deep forest,
again shines green moss upon.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterpiece is a Five-Character Quatrain adhering strictly to the regulated tonal patterns of the Tang Dynasty. The poem employs a Level Tone rhyme scheme across the even-numbered lines, utilizing the jiang rhyme category to create an acoustic resonance that mirrors the fading echoes described in the text. Wang Wei masterfully pairs visual absence with auditory presence in the opening couplet, while the concluding couplet shifts from expansive spatial dimensions down to microscopic textures on the forest floor, demonstrating an exquisite architectural symmetry.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the mid-Tang Dynasty, this work reflects Wang Wei's later years spent in semi-retirement at his Wangchuan estate in Lantian. Following the political turbulence and personal grief of his earlier court career, including the turmoil of shifting imperial factions and the eventual disruption of the An Lushan Rebellion, the poet sought profound solace in nature and Buddhist meditative practices. The poem is not merely a landscape sketch; it is an existential enactment of quietude, capturing the precise moment where sensory perception dissolves into meditative void.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem traces a contemplative descent from auditory illusion to the silent illumination of nature, mapping a meditative journey through emptiness.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Empty mountain not see people") establishes an overwhelming sense of spatial desolation and silence, which is abruptly yet softly broken in Line 2 ("only hear people speech echoing") by disembodied voices, creating an immediate tension between stillness and sound.
  • Lines 3-4 (Resolving Couplet): Line 3 ("Returned sunlight enters deep forest") introduces low-angled evening light piercing through dense foliage, while Line 4 ("again shines green moss upon") focuses the entire cosmic energy onto the humble, resilient surface of green moss, completing the cycle of tranquil illumination.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

Wang Wei deeply infuses his poetry with Buddhist Chan philosophy and Daoist naturalism, transforming physical geography into psychological states of being:

  • Empty Mountain (Kong Shan): Far from representing a barren wasteland, the term denotes the Buddhist concept of emptiness, where phenomenal existence is stripped of ego and attachment.
  • Returned Sunlight (Fan Jing): Literally referring to slanting evening sunlight reflecting off distant surfaces, it symbolizes the gentle, non-intrusive illumination of wisdom penetrating the thickets of worldly delusion.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical heart of the poem lies in the delicate equilibrium between sound and silence, visibility and invisibility. By dissolving human presence into mere echoes and shifting the final focus to inanimate moss touched by fading light, Wang Wei articulates a profound Daoist-Buddhist synthesis: true awareness arises only when the self steps back to let the universe observe itself. This timeless meditation on quietude continues to resonate globally across centuries, offering modern readers a sanctuary of stillness amidst human turbulence.
