Auspicious Crane Immortal: Suburban Fields Newly Washed by Rain

Suburban plains have washed the recent shower,
where shattered leaves are strewn, and though the wind has died, still dance in air.
A slanting sun hangs low in ancient trees,
casting the distant mountain's painted brows
in shades of heavy sorrow and light green.
Along the very road I came before,
the mountain blossoms half reveal their tender gold.
Yet now, beside the brook, only the flowing water
remains to greet the traveler as of old.

Without a word,
the courier station sits in deep repose;
I dismount to search the wall
where once my brush inscribed our parting verse.
A weary wanderer lost in idle grief,
burdened by separation's bitterest pain.
Though mirrors be concealed and fragrance safely stored,
when years have passed and I return once more,
will peach blossoms and human faces still remain?
I dwell upon the deep and quiet chamber by the little tower,
where sometimes in my dreams I wander back again.

Suburban fields newly passed rain.
See ruined leaves scattered,
wind settling still dancing.
Slanting sun hangs deep trees.
Reflecting deep sorrow shallow eyebrows, distant mountains eyebrow charm.
Coming time old road,
still cliff flowers, delicate yellow half spitting.
Arriving until now, only have stream side flowing water,
seeing person as before.
Without speech.
Post station deep quiet,
dismounting still seeking, formerly once inscribed place.
Alistless weary traveler,
wounding parting grief, most sorrowful bitter.
Even if collecting fragrance hiding mirror, other year returning again,
human face peach blossom present whether.
Thinking deep small pavilion quiet window,
sometimes dreaming goes.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric poem follows the Song Ci tune pattern titled Auspicious Crane Immortal. The metrical structure requires a precise arrangement of alternating line lengths, shifting from brief, staccato clauses to expansive, flowing phrases that mirror the emotional cadence of the traveler. The rhyme scheme utilizes level-tone rhymes that shift subtly across stanzas to accommodate the shifting psychological states from desolate external observation to internal retrospection and reverie.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the Southern Song dynasty by Yuan Quhua, a scholar and official who experienced the melancholic displacement characteristic of the era following the retreat south of the Huai River. The poem captures the poignant existential condition of the weary literatus traversing the provincial postal routes, weighed down by personal parting and the broader cultural atmosphere of nostalgia and loss.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem traces a spatial and psychological journey from a rain-washed rural landscape to an abandoned lodging, culminating in a timeless meditation on time and memory.

  • Lines 1-3 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Suburban plains have washed the recent shower") sets an immediate post-deluge scene of quiet desolation. Line 2 and Line 3 ("where shattered leaves are strewn, and though the wind has died, still dance in air") employ dynamic inertia, capturing fallen leaves that refuse to rest, symbolizing restless agitation.
  • Lines 4-6 (First Antithetical Turn): The descending sun in Line 4 ("A slanting sun hangs low in ancient trees") bleeds into the personified landscape of Line 5 and Line 6 ("casting the distant mountain's painted brows / in shades of heavy sorrow and light green"), merging external topography with internal grief.
  • Lines 7-11 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): The temporal bridge in Line 7 and Line 8 ("Along the very road I came before, / the mountain blossoms half reveal their tender gold") contrasts the unchanging cycles of nature with human displacement, resolved by the mute witness in Line 10 ("the courier station sits in deep repose").
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The invocation of the legendary peach blossom motif in the final lines ("when years have passed and I return once more, / will peach blossoms and human faces still remain?") draws upon classic literary precedents of lost romance, closing on an ethereal note of dream-state transcendence.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poem is rich in traditional Chinese poetic imagery that conveys layers of emotional resonance for the discerning reader.

  • Peach Blossoms: Evoking classical narratives of fleeting romance and unattainable past encounters, signifying the irreversible passage of time and the permanent loss of youthful grace.
  • Postal Stations and Inscribed Walls: Serving as tangible markers of the itinerant literati life, where temporary lodgings become repositories of emotional archaeology through poetry carved into wood or plaster.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The piece synthesizes Daoist themes of natural impermanence with Confucian sentiments of social duty and relational grief. The contrast between the unfeeling, eternal flow of the stream and the vulnerable, aging traveler underscores a universal human confrontation with mortality and separation that transcends its specific Song dynasty provenance.
