Bamboo Horse: Ascending the Desolate Watchtower

I climb the desolate ramparts of the lonely fort,
Where a solitary pavilion overlooks the boundless waste,
And I gaze in silence upon the mist-veiled islets.
A double rainbow hangs across the sudden rain,
While a fierce autumn wind brushes the balustrade,
Subduing at last the stifling summer heat.
Slowly I mark how a single leaf startles the fading year,
And dying cicadas clamor in the evening light,
As the season of White Autumn takes its sway.
Surveying the view, I yearn for vanished joys,
And point toward the distant imperial capital,
Lost deep within non-misty, non-smoke-dimmed haze.
Facing all this, retrospective sorrow gathers fast;
New griefs easily pile high, while old friends never meet.
Leaning high against the wind all day in fixed dismay,
I win only a silent, soul-consuming desolation.
Straining my eyes across drifting wisps of clearing vapor,
Amid scattered crows and the desolate river city's dusk,
The painted horn sounds from the southern watchtower,
Once more escorting the lingering sun away.

Ascending desolate lonely ramparts,
precarious pavilion broad viewing,
quietly facing misty islets.
Facing female rainbow hanging rain,
male wind brushing railing,
slightly gathering vexing heat.
Gradually perceiving one leaf startling autumn,
expiring cicadas clamoring evening,
white Shang seasonal sequence.
Observing scenery recalling former joy,
pointing toward divine capital,
non-mist non-smoke deep place.
Toward this forming retrospective sorrow,
new griefs easily accumulating,
old friends difficult to gather.
Leaning high all day gazing fixedly,
winning soul-dissolving without words.
Extending eyes clearing mist drifting lightly,
muted crows scattered, desolate river city dusk.
Southern tower painted horn,
yet sending remaining sun away.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This classical lyric follows the Song Ci tune pattern titled Bamboo Horse. The piece is structured in a divided layout typical of long lyrics, moving from an expansive visual landscape down to intense psychological interiority. The metrical design balances expansive, leisurely phrasing in the opening descriptive section with abrupt, broken syntactical joints in the concluding lines to mirror emotional fragmentation. The rhyme scheme shifts fluidly across stanza breaks to capture the transition from external scenery to profound personal grief.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the Northern Song Dynasty, this lyric reflects the signature aesthetic of Liu Yong, who spent decades wandering between imperial examinations, bustling urban pleasure quarters, and harsh provincial demotions. The existential impulse of the poem arises from the acute melancholy of the perpetual traveler stranded far from the imperial capital. Stripped of courtly favor and surrounded by the stark imagery of autumn desolation, the poet projects his political alienation and personal rootlessness onto the expansive river landscape of ancient China.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds through a meticulous progression from broad topographical observation to intimate psychological collapse. The opening couplets establish an atmospheric stillness before introducing subtle signs of seasonal transition.

  • Lines 1-3 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Ascending desolate lonely ramparts") establishes an immediate sense of abandonment, while Line 2 and Line 3 ("quietly facing misty islets") frame the vast, melancholic space of river exile.
  • Lines 4-6 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 4 ("Facing female rainbow hanging rain") and Line 5 ("male wind brushing railing") deploy striking meteorological dualities to signal the volatile shift from summer heat to autumn.
  • Lines 7-9 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Line 7 ("Gradually perceiving one leaf startling autumn") invokes the classic poetic trope of falling leaves signaling the inevitable decline of both year and life.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): Line 18 ("winning soul-dissolving without words") and the final lines culminate in total speechlessness as the sounding horn banishes the last light of day.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poem is rich with traditional cultural tokens that carry profound resonance in classical Chinese literature:

  • Cicada: The expiring cicadas in the evening symbolize the frail, transient voice of the upright scholar caught in the harsh decline of fortune.
  • Imperial Capital: The distant capital represents both the source of past political favor and the painful center of exclusion for the exiled official.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

At its core, this lyric synthesizes Confucian duty with Daoist emotional detachment, illustrating the universal human agony of displacement and the quiet endurance of sorrow. The juxtaposition of indifferent natural cycles with acute human mortality speaks across centuries, capturing the timeless vulnerability of the solitary wanderer facing the twilight of life.
