Tune: Clearing Rain

Fading night mists lift, spring songbirds fall still, and scattered rain taps the high eaves. Along the garden walls, green jade banners of bamboo wash free of leaden frost, their tender tips entwining. Dampness tightens the zither silk, chill creeps past the screen to the pillow, and drifting webs brush the bamboo blinds. Here in the empty relay station, I listen to the endless drip from the eaves, drifting into a heavy, half-woke sleep.

Sudden grief breaks the dream; so fragile it leaves no trace, and self-pity deepens my solitude. The traveler's longing to return is urgent, dreading above all else that rushing floods might mire his cart. How bear this desolation? Like Yu Xin in his decline, like Wei Qing worn thin, every passing moment wounds the eye and heart. No wonder the guest of Pingyang sheds double tears at the sorrowful notes of the flute, while all around lies a desolate realm of green weeds. Red petals scatter across the earth, and at the gate the wild cherries cluster like beans. Night has fallen—with whom could I ever hold a candle to roam?
duì sù yān shōu, chūn qín jìng, fēi yǔ shí míng gāo wū.
qiáng tóu qīng yù pèi, xǐ qiān shuāng dōu jìn, nèn shāo xiāng chù.
rùn bì qín sī, hán qīn zhěn zhàng, chóng wǎng chuī zhān lián zhú.
yóu tíng wú rén chù, tīng yán shēng bù duàn, kùn mián chū shú.
nài chóu jí dùn jīng, mèng qīng nán jì, zì lián yōu dú.
xíng rén guī yì sù.
zuì xiān niàn, liú lǎo fáng chē gǔ.
zěn nài xiàng, lán chéng qiáo cuì, wèi qīng léi, děng xián shí, yì shāng xīn mù.
wèi guài píng yáng kè, shuāng lèi luò, dí zhōng āi qǔ.
kuàng xiāo suǒ, qīng wú guó.
hóng sǎn pū dì, mén wài jīng táo rú shū.
yè yóu gòng shuí bǐng zhú.
Facing overnight smoke gathering, spring birds are quiet, flying rain at times sounds on high roofs.
Wall heads green jade banners, washed lead frost all gone, tender twig tips touching each other.
Moisture presses zither strings, cold invades pillow screens, insect webs blown touch curtain bamboo.
Post station uninhabited place, listening eaves sound unbroken, drowsy sleep just ripening.
How to bear sorrow extreme suddenly startling, dream light difficult to remember, self-pitying secluded solitude.
Wayfarer returning intention swift.
First of all thinking, floodwaters hinder cart hubs.
How to face, Yu Xin haggard, Wei Qing emaciated, casually time, easily wounding heart and eyes.
Not strange Pingyang guest, double tears falling, flute inside sorrowful tune.
Furthermore desolate, green weed country.
Red fragments spread earth, outside gate cherry plum like beans.
Night roaming with whom holding candle.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This lyric follows the traditional Song Ci tune pattern known as Clearing Rain, a demanding metrical form characterized by complex shifts in line length and tonal modulation. Zhou Bangyan, celebrated as the master architect of the Northern Song lyric, constructs this piece through an intricate progression from atmospheric exterior description to deeply internalized psychological lament. The sonic architecture relies heavily on subdued level-tone rhymes alternating with sharp, entering-tone fractures that mimic the relentless tapping of spring rain and the sudden jolts of traveler's anxiety.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the late Northern Song dynasty, a period of acute bureaucratic factionalism and intellectual introspection, the lyric reflects the quintessential mindset of the displaced literati-official. Zhou Bangyan spent much of his career navigating the perilous waters of imperial court politics in Bianjing, frequently enduring demotions and administrative exiles to provincial outposts. The poem captures the existential vertigo of the lonely traveler stranded in a remote post station, where physical isolation compounds the psychological burden of political displacement and longing for home.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds across a sweeping structural arc, moving from sensory observation of the rainy morning to deep historical self-identification with tragic figures of antiquity.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): The opening establishes a muted, damp acoustic space where lingering smoke, silent birds, and intermittent rain set a tone of melancholy quietude.
  • Lines 10-13 (First Antithetical Turn): The speaker's anxiety shifts from atmospheric gloom to the practical terrors of travel, invoking historical exemplars of exhaustion and exile such as Yu Xin and Wei Qing.
  • Lines 14-17 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): References to the guest of Pingyang grieving over a flute tune elevate personal homesickness to a universal archetype of sorrow.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The final image of scattered red petals and empty night roaming leaves the speaker suspended in absolute, unshareable solitude.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

Zhou Bangyan embeds rich traditional imagery that resonates deeply within classical Chinese aesthetics without requiring modern glosses:

  • Spring Rain and Drip: Serving as both a realistic meteorological marker and an acoustic mirror for persistent sorrow, the unending sound of water outside the eaves underscores the relentless passage of time and confinement.
  • Scattered Red Petals: Symbolizing the fading of youth, the transience of beauty, and the abrupt termination of spring, falling blossoms reinforce the speaker's acute sense of abandonment.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

At its philosophical core, the lyric synthesizes Confucian duty with Daoist melancholy. The traveler's urgent desire to return to his familial and political obligations clashes with an inescapable cosmic isolation. Zhou Bangyan transforms ordinary meteorological phenomena into an externalization of the vulnerable human soul, speaking across centuries to anyone who has endured the quiet agony of displacement and the search for enduring meaning in an ephemeral world.
