Resentment on the Jade Steps

Upon the jade steps, white dews rise;
Through the long night, they chill her silken shoes.
She turns, lets fall the crystal-beaded blind,
And through its gleaming mesh, watches the autumn moon.
玉階生白露,夜久侵羅襪。
卻下水精簾,玲瓏望秋月。
yù jiē shēng bái lù,
yè jiǔ qīn luó wà.
què xià shuǐ jīng lián,
líng lóng wàng qiū yuè.
Jade steps produce white dew,
night long invades silk gauze socks.
Retreating lowers crystal blind,
lingeringly gazes at autumn moon.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterpiece is composed in the strict five-character ancient verse form, maintaining a taut four-line quatrain structure. The composition flows with an effortless acoustic resonance, anchored by the level-tone rhyme ending the first, second, and fourth lines. The architectural progression moves gracefully from physical tactile sensation in the opening lines to an inward psychological movement, creating an exquisite structural pivot at the third line where the protagonist turns away from the chilling exterior.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Written during the high flourishing of the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Xuanzong, the poem channels the classical trope of palace lamentation, echoing the traditional frustration of neglected imperial consorts waiting within the secluded chambers of the inner court. Li Bai masterfully infuses this traditional theme with a piercing psychological immediacy, reflecting the broader imperial court culture where brilliant scholars and loyal subjects alike experienced the chilling effects of unrecognized merit and political alienation.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds through a delicate accumulation of sensory details, progressing from external environmental chill to internalized emotional longing.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Jade steps produce white dew") establishes a desolate, freezing atmosphere upon the polished stone stairs. Line 2 ("Night long invades silk gauze socks") introduces the physical vulnerability of the protagonist, whose thin silk footwear is slowly permeated by the autumn dampness as she waits in vain.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("Retreating lowers crystal blind") marks a definitive physical action of withdrawal, signaling closed seclusion. Line 4 ("Lingeringly gazes at autumn moon") captures the paradox of looking out toward the cold, distant satellite through a translucent veil, synthesizing imprisonment and longing.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The imagery within the poem operates through profound traditional metaphors deeply embedded in classical Chinese poetics.

  • Jade Steps and Silk Socks: These elements signify refinement, extreme luxury, and simultaneous physical fragility, contrasting the pristine imperial environment with the chilling emotional neglect suffered by its inhabitants.
  • Crystal Blind and Autumn Moon: The translucent screen acts as a barrier that neither completely shuts out the world nor provides solace, while the autumn moon universally symbolizes the sorrow of separation, cold radiance, and unfulfilled reunion.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical heart of the poem rests upon the Daoist-infused aesthetic of silence and unspoken emotional depth, where profound sorrow is never explicitly named but revealed entirely through physical surroundings and atmospheric chill. This masterpiece resonates across global literary traditions because it captures the universal human condition of patient, unrewarded devotion and the quiet dignity maintained in the face of emotional abandonment.
