Returning to Mount Song

Clear streams encircle the long thicket,
carriages and horses drift away in ease.
The running water seems to feel a purpose,
evening birds fly back together home.
A ruined town overlooks the ancient ferry,
the setting sun floods autumn mountains.
Far below the towering heights of Song,
I return at last and close my rustic gate.
清川帶長薄,車馬去閑閑。
流水如有意,暮禽相與還。
荒城臨古渡,落日滿秋山。
迢遞嵩高下,歸來且閉關。
qīng chuān dài cháng bó, chē mǎ qù xián xián.
liǔ shuǐ rú yǒu yì, mù qín xiāng yǔ hái.
huāng chéng lín gǔ dù, luò rì mǎn qiū shān.
tiáo dì sōng gāo xià, guī lái qiě bì guān.
Clear stream girds long thicket,
carriages and horses depart leisurely-leisurely.
Running water as if having intent,
evening birds together return.
Desolate city borders ancient ferry,
setting sun fills autumn mountains.
Stretching far below Mount Song,
returning now, for a time I close the gate.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterpiece is composed in the strict five-character regulated verse form, known as wulü, featuring a parallel structure across its central couplets. The poem observes the rigorous tonal counterpoint characteristic of High Tang masterworks, deploying level and deflected tones to establish an auditory resonance that mirrors the tranquil natural landscape. The rhyme scheme operates on an even-numbered line rhyme utilizing open vocalic terminals in the level tone category, granting the verse an unhurried, meditative cadence.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Written during the mature phase of Wang Wei's life, the poem reflects the poet's complex oscillation between imperial service at the cosmopolitan Chang'an court and profound spiritual reclusion at his estate in Wangchuan near Mount Song. As a devout practitioner of Chan Buddhism and an accomplished landscape painter, Wang Wei frequently sought refuge from the political machinations and administrative burnout of the capital. This work captures the exact psychological transition from public obligation to solitary retreat, anchoring the existential impulse in the physical geography of the sacred Mount Song region.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The poem unfolds through a deliberate spatial and psychological progression, moving from the bustling margins of civilization into the deep interior of mountain silence.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): Line 1 ("Clear stream girds long thicket") establishes a pristine, boundary-defining landscape where water and vegetation merge. Line 2 ("carriages and horses depart leisurely-leisurely") introduces human transit, but the reduplicated adverb emphasizes a deliberate slowness, detaching the traveler from worldly urgency.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): Line 3 ("Running water as if having intent") projects human consciousness onto nature, imbuing the stream with conscious volition. Line 4 ("evening birds together return") mirrors this homeward impulse, aligning the poet's psychological homecoming with the instinctive roosting of birds at dusk.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): Line 5 ("Desolate city borders ancient ferry") broadens the historical vista to include ancient ruin and transient human endeavor. Line 6 ("the setting sun floods autumn mountains") provides a magnificent visual crescendo, where the waning solar light saturates the autumnal topography with golden melancholy.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): Line 7 ("Stretching far below the towering heights of Song") situates the speaker at the grand geographical threshold of the sacred mountain. Line 8 ("I return at last and close my rustic gate") concludes the journey with a definitive physical action of closure, sealing the boundary between the mundane world and internal spiritual freedom.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The poem relies on deeply ingrained classical motifs to articulate spiritual awakening and withdrawal.

  • Mount Song: Symbolizes the ultimate sanctuary for Daoist alchemists, Buddhist monks, and reclusive scholars seeking transcendence away from imperial entanglements.
  • Returning Gate: Represents the conscious act of shutting out worldly desires and socio-political ambition, a standard metaphor for entering meditative stillness and self-cultivation.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

The philosophical foundation of the poem rests upon a seamless synthesis of Chan Buddhist non-attachment and Daoist naturalism. Wang Wei does not moralize about his retreat from official duty; rather, he allows the objective phenomena of the natural world—the flowing stream, the homeward birds, the setting sun—to externalize an inner state of unburdened awareness. This resonance speaks across cultural boundaries, offering modern readers an enduring meditation on how physical solitude can restore psychological equilibrium in a chaotic world.
