Melody of the Curved Jade Pipe: Departing Sorrows over Mountains and Rivers

Clouds drift above the ridge, the riverside day fades late;
mist and waves fill my sight as I lean long on the railing.
Standing, I gaze out at passes and rivers, desolate and stark,
across a thousand miles of crisp autumn air.
How can I bear to fix my gaze?
Far away is the imperial capital, graceful as an immortal maiden;
since our parting, woven brocade messages have found no match.
The lone, broken goose brings no tidings,
slowly descending upon the reedy sandbar.
My melancholy stretches endlessly on.
I secretly recall those early days, how many
quiet joys and exquisite rendezvous we shared,
ever knowing reunions and partings defy schedule,
turning instead into the bitterness of rain and the sorrow of clouds.
Our wandering pursuits are cut off.
Whenever I climb mountains or look out over waters,
it stirs up the deep affairs of my entire life—-
a sudden wave of desolate gloom,
a long day spent in utter silence,
as I slowly descend the storied tower.
lǒng shǒu yún fēi, jiāng biān rì wǎn, yān bō mǎn mù píng lán jiǔ.
lì wàng guān hé xiāo suǒ, qiān lǐ qīng qiū.
rěn níng móu.
yǎo yǎo shén jīng, yíng yíng xiān zǐ, bié lái jǐn zì zhōng nán ǒu.
duàn yàn wú píng, rǎn rǎn fēi xià tīng zhōu.
sī yōu yōu.
àn xiǎng dāng chū, yǒu duō shǎo, yōu huān jiā huì, qǐ zhī jù sàn nán qī, fān chéng yǔ hèn yún chóu.
zǔ zhuī yóu.
měi dēng shān lín shuǐ, rě qǐ píng shēng xīn shì, yì chǎng xiāo àn, yǒng rì wú yán, què xià céng lóu.
Ridge-head clouds fly, river-side sun late, mist waves full eyes leaning balustrade long.
Standing gaze frontier river desolate, thousand li clear autumn.
Endure to fix gaze.
Far-off divine capital, graceful fairy, since parting brocade letter ultimately difficult to match.
Broken wild goose without proof, slowly flying down sandbar.
Thoughts lingering-long.
Secretly recall initial-time, how many, quiet joy fine encounters, how knew gathering parting difficult to schedule, instead become rain hate cloud sorrow.
Blocked pursuing excursions.
Every mounting mountain facing water, stir up lifelong heart matters, one scene dim-gloom, long day without speech, descending layered tower.

I. Formal Poetic Architecture & Meter

This masterpiece belongs to the expansive Song Ci lyric tune known as Melody of the Curved Jade Pipe, a double-stanza form designed for melancholic narrative and emotional unfolding. The tonal structure adheres to strict Northern Song prosody, blending shorter, abrupt phrasing in the opening lines with expansive, flowing cadence in the second stanza. The architectural design relies on subtle internal tonal contrasts and stanzaic pivot points, shifting seamlessly from physical landscape observation to internal psychological lament.

II. Historical Chronology & Existential Impulse

Composed during the Northern Song Dynasty, this lyric reflects the signature aesthetic of Liu Yong, the preeminent master of the slow lyric tune who revolutionized urban vernacular aesthetics and elite literati expression. Set against the backdrop of Bianjing, the imperial capital, and the expansive border landscapes of Song geography, the poem captures the existential alienation of the wandering scholar-official. Trapped between bureaucratic exile and urban displacement, the poet translates personal romantic disillusionment into a universal meditation on temporal transience and geographical separation.

III. Line-by-Line Exegesis & Allusion Decoding

The lyric moves deliberately from objective external desolation to intimate memory and final resignation across two distinct structural movements.

  • Lines 1-2 (Opening Couplet): The poem opens with desolate meteorological and geographical markers, establishing a mood of heavy detachment as the speaker gazes across mist-choked autumn waters from a high pavilion.
  • Lines 3-4 (First Antithetical Turn): The psychological weight increases in Line 3 ("Endure to fix gaze"), leading to a panoramic vista of barren frontiers under a chilling autumn sky.
  • Lines 5-6 (Second Antithetical Turn / Climax): The poem shifts inward to evoke the distant imperial capital and an unattainable beloved, utilizing the traditional motif of the unread brocade letter and the wandering wild goose.
  • Closing Lines (Resolving Couplet): The final movement dissolves into silent despair, where every natural vista inevitably triggers lifelong emotional burdens, culminating in wordless descent from the tower.

IV. Cultural Symbolism & Key Metaphors

The text employs sophisticated traditional poetic tokens deeply rooted in classical Chinese literature to articulate psychological states without direct exposition.

  • Wild Goose (Yan): Representing the quintessential messenger of seasonal migration, the broken or lone goose embodies severed communication and emotional isolation.
  • Rain and Cloud (Yu Yun): Evoking traditional classical tropes of intimacy and separation, these elements signify fleeting romantic passion transformed into enduring sorrow.

V. Philosophical Core & Global Resonance

At its philosophical core, this lyric synthesizes Confucian duty with Daoist melancholy, reflecting the inevitable alienation of the sensitive individual navigating an unpredictable empire. The tension between fleeting human encounters and vast, uncaring natural landscapes establishes a timeless meditation on human vulnerability, rendering the poem a universal monument to longing and memory.
